Medicare Parts C and D are provided by private, Medicare-approved insurance companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part A is Hospital Insurance<\/strong>\u00a0and covers costs associated with confinement in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (but not physician\u2019s fees).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nPart B is Medical Insurance\u00a0<\/strong>helps cover physicians\u2019 services, outpatient care, diagnostic tests and supplies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part C (Medicare Advantage)<\/strong>plans provide benefits and services covered under Parts A and B and usually offer additional coverage such as vision, hearing, dental, and\/or health and wellness programs. They also impose a maximum liability cap for the beneficiary.\u00a0 Plans usually include prescription drug coverage.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Part D (prescription drug coverage)<\/strong>plans help cover the cost of prescription drugs and are available for an additional premium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once eligible for Medicare, your choice of\u00a0ways to receive benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Medicare Parts A and B<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Medicare\u00a0Supplement\u00a0<\/strong>(Medigap)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prescription Drug Plan\u00a0<\/strong>(Part D)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medicare Advantage Plan<\/strong>(Part C)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Enrollment Periods for Parts A and B<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are receiving Social Security benefits you\u2019ll\u00a0 automatically get Medicare Parts A and B starting the first day of the month you turn 65.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you do not want to enroll in Parts A or B, you should decline coverage by following the instructions on your Medicare card.<\/li>\n<li>Approximately 99% of Medicare beneficiaries receive premium\u00a0free Part A hospital insurance. If you are among this group, there is probably no reason to decline Part A coverage.<\/li>\n<li>Part B requires premium payments that is based on your income. If you don\u2019t decline coverage, the Part B premium will be deducted automatically from your Social Security or RRB benefit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Click\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.medicare.gov<\/a>\u00a0for additional information.<\/p>\n<p>If you are not yet receiving Social Security or RRB benefits when you turn 65, you have to enroll in Medicare. There are three enrollment periods for Medicare Parts A and B.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Initial Enrollment Period<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 To avoid penalties, you should enroll during your initial enrollment period, which starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after the month you turn 65.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Open Enrollment<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 In the Fall of each year during Open Enrollment (October 15 to December 7), you may change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or change Medicare Advantage plans. The new coverage would begin on January 1 the following year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Special Enrollment \u2013 Employer based coverage \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0If you didn\u2019t sign up for Medicare Part A and\/or Part B when you were first eligible because you were covered under a group health plan based on your current employment (or your spouse\u2019s), you can enroll at any time you have coverage as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During the 8-month period that begins the month after the employment ends or the group health plan insurance coverage ends, whichever happens first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What\u2019s Right for You?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most Medicare beneficiaries choose to go beyond\u00a0Medicare Parts A and B. Part A has hospital\u00a0<u>deductibles<\/u>\u00a0and Part B has a\u00a0<u>20% co-insurance<\/u>\u00a0liability, with no limit on your \u00a0out of pocket expenses.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Medicare\u00a0Supplement<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Medicare Advantage<\/strong>\u00a0plans eliminate or reduce the co-insurance and deductibles under Medicare and place a cap on liability. Each individual and\/or family situation is unique.
